Baby Bloomers.

dress and bloomers2, originally uploaded by Lazy Seamstress.
I do love baby bloomers, either worn under a short dress like my Flossie's Pinafore, or simply with a little t shirt on sunny days. Who can resist chubby little baby thighs, so cute!

Today I'm sharing with you my free pattern and tutorial for baby bloomers you can whip up in less than an hour and using less than half a metre of fabric, often you can squeeze a pair out of fabric in your scrap bag.

bloomers

The outfit featured here is made with vintage fabric. The dress is made using the Flossie's Pinafore pattern, the applique uses scraps from my scrap bag and the Scrappy Dove template.

And good news if you are looking for patterns to use to make items to sell, I am currently changing my policy; in future if you are a sole trader and would like to use any of my free patterns or tutorials or any of my paper patterns to make items to sell at a craft fair or on your web space then please do.
All I ask is a link back to me here at Lazy Seamstress as the original designer. If you are unsure if you qualify as a sole trader please contact me and I'll be happy to discuss with you.
Remember if you do use any of my patterns or tutorials, I love to hear from you, and I especially love photos, which with your permission I like to feature on the blog, and on social media.

Take a look at my Tutorials page for many more free patterns and tutorials.

Don't be shy, say hello!

  2. Jeanette you are a lovely generous lady. I might just make a pinafore and bloomers for Gracie-Boo.

Well, I had a disaster with my tunic top, not only have I decided that I detest rows and rows of gathers, I had also failed to read the pattern correctly and chosen totally unsuitable material, gah! I used a light wool blend when it should have been a light cotton because of the gathers, doh! Still, i am undaunted and still might decide to tackle the pattern as I hate to be outnumbered by a sewing or knitting pattern. The positive upshot was I learnt a salutory lesson and celebrated my mistakes!! I have however had some successes in the loft room ~ a jester style birthday crown for a friend's little girl and an art bag and roll up pencil case for Pip's friend, Beth, so all in all a good week.

  5. They are so cute. I love bloomers under dresses. I really, really hate to see nappies hanging out the end of cute dresses, so bloomer are a must, if you ask me. Sadly, I have no-one at the moment to make these for, but as soon as I do, I will be headed for your tute. Thanks for sharing

  6. Love the pattern, much better than other on-line pants and knickers pattern, which can make the front and back the same (i.e. have side seams only and say ' Cut 2'). Not the right shape for a baby!
It also occurs to me that you could adapt this into shorts by lengthening the legs by an inch or two and maybe extending the waistline to make a deeper waistband. Obviously you wouldn't then elasticate the legs!

  7. I've now made these in between sizes 3-6 months and 6-12 months for my grand-daughter, who is 7 1/2 months by birth date, but was 10 weeks premature. She's 5.5kg or a little over 12 lbs. I thought these might be on the big side but allow for growth. I liked the pattern because, as I said earlier, unlike most free pants patterns for kids, it does have a longer measurement in the back seam than the front, which is correct. But I didn't find it any too big, barely needed to elasticate the waist at all. So I think next time I will go for a bigger size, and I will also extend the inner leg seam to make a wider crutch, so it more fully covers her nappies (diapers in the US). But a big thank you - the idea is great. I think it could also be adapted to make shorts or pants with again a longer leg.

  8. Hiya,

Please forgive my ignorance but could you please confirm whether or not the seam allowance is already included in your template or does it need to be added when cutting?

    Thanks!

  10. im sorry but this tutorial is awful... you dont at all explain how to lay the fabric or what part of the pattern is what. I make shorts ALL the time so I have a basic understanding of how shorts patterns work and this pattern does not match up no matter which way I lay the fabric (again you failed to explain) and your photos are awful and dont show how to actually assemble the garment. Thank god the pattern was free but Im pretty upset I just wasted fabric cutting out this crappy pattern.
