Falling Behind

3:02 pm

I'm missing my daily catch up with all my babyloss friends around the globe.

Things here are still so crazy, I seem to be constantly making hospital visits or waiting on midwives. Ernest's jaundice is going to take some time to clear properly, and he has lost a lot of weight with the breastfeeding issues. He has a tongue tie, which in combination with his high palette, small mouth, jaundice and being induced early makes for a pretty dismal attempt at breastfeeding efficiently.
He's getting his tongue snipped on Monday, so there is hope things will improve after then. Plus my new best friend, the breast pump and I have managed to help him gain a little weight over the past couple of days, so he's heading in the right direction.
I think it's safe to say that life with our rainbow baby isn't all fluffy clouds and unicorns. I can't say I really expected it to be, but I had hoped for at least normal...whatever that is!

Don't be shy, say hello!

  3. So the tongue tie would explain the struggle with BFing! Good news on the pumping, I could never get the hang of it and only ever managed to get miniscule amounts out.
He is just such a gorgeous lil man, he reminds me of my #4 who was very jaundiced too. The weight loss and yellow made him look like a lil old man - a grumpy one at that! Absolutely gorgeous!

  4. ohh no wonder he was struggling. I'm sure he'll be much better after the tongue tie is sorted. Poor little guy, hope things get a whole lot easier for you both soon xxx

  5. Oh Jeanette, you must be so tired right now! Poor lil Ernest, and you. But it's a problem that you can sort, and it will all get better. Wishing you strength and lots of sleep (and lots of milk making food and drink!) to help you pump. Good luck for the weekend for you all xxx

  7. My friend's little one had trouble BFing until he had his tongue snipped, then he found it much easier and thrived on the breast. Hugs to you and the little fella.

p.s. no such thing as normal ;) xxx

  9. hang in there Jeanette X
Sounds like you are on the road to getting the bf issues sorted. Have faith that you'll work it out together.

So many people (or perhaps even most people?!) struggle with one thing or another in the early days, so I think it sounds like you ARE normal!

lots of love to you and gorgeous Ernest XXX

  10. Oh sounds familiar, yet I'd never breastfed before so I guess I felt more lost and had less confidence than you might have. I am sure you and Ernest will make this work and soon.
Angus also had a high palette, so I know how tough it makes it.
Don't worry about keeping up with "us" though. Right now, just focus on you and the sweet little man in your arms. We know it isn't all fluffy clouds and unicorns, but we also know how super grateful you are for him.
Can't wait to see more pics.
    Much love to you.

  12. You are doing great!!! Think of all those women who gice up BFing at the first hurdle. With all the things you have had to contend with you are honestly being amazing. Hope his little snip helps. xx

  14. Oh Jeanette. Sending lots of breast pump empathy. My first drank ebm out of a medicine cup, albeit just for a few days, then my second was exclusively on ebm because of his cleft.
Really hope things improve very very soon. Thinking of you.

  20. aw Jeanette my youngest had a profound tongue tie - we've just discovered eldest has a lesser one (she's 14!!). I hope that feeding gets easier for you after Monday, but would also prepare yourself not to expect miracles.

  21. Sorry, that sounds really negative! Of course it's highly likely that BF will become much easier after the snip, it's just that I had everyone tell me that things would be just fine and unfortunately it didn't work out like that for us, so it kind of felt like a double blow, IYSWIM? Will be keeping fingers crossed that you get the easier feeding path :D

  22. It's tough - I have had hideous feeding problems this time. But I was lucky and its all OK now. I understand the bottle thing - they suggested that I try that and I felt terrible - a failure, a cheat and all the rest. God, it's never easy, is it?
