Keeping Warm While Babywearing

Over the years I've owned several babywearing coats. This one, so far is my favourite.
I bought this blue coat in the January Sales with the intention of making it into a babywearing coat.
I bought it one size too big, and for the bargain price of £25.

I then bought some gorgeous woven wool fabric to add panels into the coat, and using the seams on the back of the coat as a guide, worked out where I needed to put the panels.

My chosen fabric for the inserts.
First inserts in place

There was lots of trying on, and lots of figuring out as I went.

I needed to add panels in the side seams of the coat to account for Ernest's feet.

Side inserts to make way for toddler feet

As usual, now I've finished it, I can think how I would do things differently if I made another...and I might...
I have been finding myself mentally taking apart every coat I see on the street or on the bus.

Don't be shy, say hello!

  5. How very clever, I bet you could sell these so well (aka for loads lol). How cute does the little guy look in there, a complete distraction from the coat haha.

    1. yes, cause moms everywhere would appreciate being warm! I am here looking for ideas because I take my little to work with me. I am a small town news reporter and she is the third baby to come to work with me for the first year! However, I have learned from her brothers and know what I will want this time around! Thanks for the ideas!

  9. That is fabulous- can I be a customer please?! I'd definately buy one, or even a pattern telling me exactly how to do it- I am no way confident to chop up a coat to experiment on my own.
Gorgeous little man there too! :)

  12. Okay, Lazy Seamstress, I think I'm going to have to "call you" on that name.

WHEN HAVE YOU EVER BEEN LAZY?

And why do I have this feeling you are going to end up with your own show and your own clothing line?

We will all say we knew you before you were famous. :)

Admiring - the coat, you, and those great kids,

  16. brilliant!! you impress me to no end. I have cried a few tears over not being able to babywear Vivien anymore (spinal injury from Henry's birth) since she's gotten so heavy. I love to live vicariously through you both <3

  17. Absolutely brilliant. You could make a crap ton of money selling those. Not that you need to take your creativity and sell it. Just that average people like me could never make something so spectacular as that. Bravo my dear!
